How to Prepare Your Car for Shipping

A simple checklist for the week before pickup, from photos and paperwork to fuel and toll tags.

Cars secured on the decks of a carrier

Start with a wash

A clean car makes the pickup inspection meaningful. Dirt hides scratches, and that makes the condition report less useful for everyone.

Your pre-pickup checklist

Work through these items a day or two before the carrier arrives:

  • Take dated photos of all sides, the roof and the interior
  • Remove personal items and loose accessories
  • Remove toll tags and parking passes
  • Fold in mirrors and lower antennas if you can
  • Leave about a quarter tank of fuel
  • Check for leaks and tell your coordinator about any you find

Mechanical checks

Make sure the battery is charged, tires are inflated and the parking brake works. If anything about starting or stopping the car is unusual, leave a clear note for the driver.

Keys and paperwork

The driver needs one key to load and unload the vehicle. Keep your own copy of the signed condition report safe until delivery is complete.
